Slow Time in Quantum

Suniy Im

Suniy Im’s Slow Time in Quantum is an exhibition in four chapters, exploring how human consciousness and memory faces the physical world and the limits of time. In the first chapter (A Rusty Word), the artist recognizes how the words recalled by her father become detritus within his life. The second chapter (108 Sides, 36 Sights and Another Eye) discovers countless perspectives of memory within the blurred gaze of an elderly person. The third chapter (Utopia Series 1) documents time in the life of a retired military officer who has become an old man, while (Utopia Series 2) follows the circuit of words and memories between two old men, paying special attention to their aging eyes and hands.

Suniy Im’s works integrate elements of installation, video, objects, sculpture, photography, and documentary. In A Rusty Word, for example, old chandeliers hang low over a salt-covered floor, reminiscent of a beach or desert. Sagging under their own weight, the chandeliers look as if they could drop and be dragged across the floor at any moment. The light that they emit is like the last gasp of a memory, sputtered out with fading breath. The chandeliers, which once adorned lavish interior spaces, now float over a sandy beach outdoors, in a surreal scene taken from dreams or hallucinations.

Suniy Im’s art invokes every person’s consciousness and unique time. In 108 Sides, 36 Sights and Another Eye, objects with many sides float in the air, surrounded by countless fragments of reflected light that intersect and overlap, creating delicate dots and shapes. If these reflectors are memories, or the gaze that contains those memories, then the spots of light on the walls might be the meanings that have never before been looked at.

Quantum time is both a physical reality and a discontinuous phenomenon that is impossible to perceive. Quantum energy exists simultaneously as both a particle and a wave that can be recognized statistically. Perhaps Suniy Im is comparing human existence to the quantum realm.

An old man nearing the end of his life is a being who clearly exists, yet is not perceived. For this old man, the present is intertwined with deliberate memories that steadily extend into the infinite, thus becoming the “slow time in quantum” in which no one else can intervene.
